A local charity has gained Council consent for the transformation of 3 Commerce Lane into a cafe with a difference.

The cafe, a social enterprise to be called ‘The Daily’, will have a meeting room for other not-for-profit community organisations to use for free, for workshops, fundraising or meetings. Profit from the cafe will go back into Te Puke with the purpose of alleviating poverty and breaking the poverty cycle in our town.

Fit out of the building is about to begin and Chairman of The Search Party Charitable Trust, Marty Robinson, is urging Te Puke to ‘join with us in supporting the local community to change the local community for good. We have a superb facility lined up and great people on board; we now have the green light to start our build! We are looking for locals that can join with us on our work days, donate materials, or sponsor items in our budget.’

The Trust, a registered charity, has already had $30,800 donated from locals to get to this point, with a further $18,050 pledged in materials and tradesmanship for the construction phase. “The amount of support so far has been encouraging! Te Puke businesses like Prowler Security, Jody Beattie Photography, Trevelyans, Rex Networks and Cornerstone Design have provided materials or workmanship for free” said Marty, “and the feedback from schools and other community groups is that they can’t wait for us to be up and running so they can use the room”.

The Trust is also funding the project through starting the catering arm of the enterprise before the cafe is open. “We have had great reviews of our catering so far”, said Cafe Manager Rebecka Billington, “our food is made from scratch with love, and we are health-conscious with our ingredients. So by booking catering with The Daily, you are supporting this charitable endeavour in our town.”

“We are having an open day at The Daily on the morning of Saturday 21 November, in conjunction with the Community Market Day, and invite people to cross the road and see our plans for the building and hear what we are about. We will have our coffee and some of our menu for sale and some samples for tasting.”
